Hatsukoi (First Love) was written and first performed by Murashita Kouzou. It premiered on February 25, 1983.
The sorrowful and melancholic song, which portrays the feelings of a protagonist who had never the courage to confess to his first love and thus is looking back at an unfulfilled love, became Murashita's greatest hit.
It reached the number 3 at the Oricon charts and was the signature tune of Murashita, going through several changes for his live appearences. It is a song that many guys like to do a cover on their acoustic guitar.
Following Murashita's death of a stroke during a rehearsal in 1999, the song has subsequently been covered many times. Notably by Nakazawa Yuuko in 2002, Acid Black Cherry in 2007 and Going Under Ground in 2008.
A cover of the song was also used as an opening in the final episode of the anime Boys Be... sung by Imai Yuuka in 2000 and as an ending in the 2009 anime tv series Sora no Otoshimono.
